Once we got reorganized and settled on a little bench, I went off to use the bathroom and fill up the water bottles. It occurred to me that we hadn’t checked the centre console of the car, and I just had a feeling…
The water was in stark contrast to the black rocky outlets leading into the sea, awash with frothy white water when the waves crashed over. We spent a lot of time there, sitting and watching the waves and taking photos.
Directly beneath us, schools of yellow tang mixed with small black fish with neon markings, bigger rainbow fish, and so many others, all together. We swam after them, they’d stop at a coral and nibble and then, as one, swim away.
On the way out, I cried because I thought about my Nana, and how I wished I’d been able to teach her how to use a smart phone and the internet!
I did see a shooting star that night, which was a high point, but it didn’t feel like much time passed between that and the 5am roaming dog pack barking, followed by the 6am rooster cock-a-doodle-contest.
Honestly, the gall – for a white man to buy land in Hawai’i, where there were NO TREATIES to cede land to colonizers, gate it off, including an entrance to the Place of Refuge, and then act like HIS MONEY should mean something to us!
