She Speaks: Abortion will never be unthinkable, but denying it must be

Spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage, is an incredibly common occurrence, so common especially early in pregnancy that we don’t actually know how frequently it occurs because it presents as a late or even regular period. There is nothing unnatural about women, and our bodies, deciding we are not willing or able to complete a pregnancy.

She Speaks: Aloha – Remember to Breathe

Half an hour later, I was holding my breath, jackknifing into the water, plunging to the ocean floor to fly along with the fish, then surfacing, blasting the water from my snorkel with a sharp exhalation, a short inhale, then a full inhale once certain the water is cleared. I had found my hâ again.

She Speaks: What death by a thousand cuts actually feels like

This teacher, who sang us “Linger” by the Cranberries on her acoustic guitar and didn’t try to hide her tears of anger when we drove her to the brink of madness, offered to pay for my trip to Ottawa. She thought it was important. She thought I was important.

She Speaks: Sugarcoating won’t save the bees

No, this weather isn’t odd or unusual. It’s predictably unpredictable; it’s climate change. And don’t be fooled by the luxury of believing this is the ‘new normal’. There may never be a normal again.

She Speaks: Muskoka has an addiction problem and it’s not what you think

Addiction is the employment of a coping skill in the absence of others. It is the natural end result of a society that does not value people, does not foster emotional intelligence, and does not teach resiliency at a young age or indeed at any age. People become addicts because they have intolerable pain.

She Speaks: It’s going to get bad before it gets worse

Colony collapse disorder taking out the bees, and countless other biosphere losses. The destabilization of the polar vortex means our winters will be more variable in temperature, causing more intense freeze/thaw cycles which will bring flooding, ice storms, white-outs, etc.

She Speaks: Where is the Village?

The saying “It takes a village to raise a child” precedes the Internet, of course. It has (apparently) untraceable roots in African culture, and there are variations like, “One knee does not bring up a child” in Sukuma and “One hand does not nurse a child” in Swahili.

She Speaks: Lorena Bobbitt, Tonya Harding, and Monica Lewinsky walk into a bar…

In each and every scenario, there were men in positions of power over women who used that power to rape, harm, and exploit. And the story was spun beyond recognition to make the woman the guilty party – and not just regular-guilt but irredeemable, caricaturesque guilt.
